Astro Bal
Astro Bal was an Andromedan smuggler from outer space and a member of the CLEG Crew.
Personality
Bal was a cautious fellow who was disgusted by the other CLEG crew members.
Role in Plot
Events of CLEG
In Smelly Space, Bal is a member of the CLEG Crew and makes jokes at the expense of Laser Beam before the crew encounters the S.S. Hooker in deep space. This leads Bal to ask Blaster Canon if they should use their blasters but ends up suggesting it could be a misunderstanding before The Hookers board the CLEG Ship and exclusively attack Bal. Bal then agrees with Canon, Laser, and Espee Tronic to blast the Hookers to death, but does not participate in the actual attack. Despite this, Bal calls his coworkers 'sadistic' before they throw him into the supply room.
Sometime later, in Explosive Delivery, Bal tries to make a joke with Laser before having a stroke. Laser, believing Bal to be dead, ejects him out into deep space before the CLEG Crew goes to deliver a package on Flarth. While waiting for tea inside of Phom's farm, Bal's corpse falls from space and crashes into the farmer's home, thus causing a fire and later the entire area to explode with the CLEG Crew just barely making it out alive.
While not directly mentioned, a mugshot of Bal can be seen in Help Wanted as part of the CLEG Crew.
Events of Micro Space
While Bal does not appear in Micro Space, he is alluded to many times. A creature that Laser adopts in Micro Space #9, Pal, bears the same color scheme as Bal. In Micro Space #13, the CLEG Crew hires Astra Naut whose outfits bears the same shade of blue as Bal's. Gexus later gives Bal's old helmet to Naut, which the latter repaints to blue, in Micro Space #24.
Trivia
- Bal was supposed to remain a main character when Smelly Space was being made. This was changed while Syp The Mighty was plotting out Explosive Delivery, feeling it would be funny to quickly kill off a main character as well as to indicate that no one in CLEG is immune to death.
- Pal shares the same colors as and a similar name to Bal.
- Like Blaster Canon, he goes by his last name rather than his first.
